How Scientists Think ?

Today, Modern science and technology has given us all the possible luxuries and amenities that previous generations could not. And it won't be an exaggeration if I told you that all this development in science and technology would not have been possible without these scientists from respective fields. Their education, working style, Intelligent quotient, and hard work has inspired every science enthusiast to become a scientist and contribute to over all wellbeing of the society. You might have read books or heard stories or seen in the movies about Einstein or Nikola Tesla and many others like how these scientists had a magical and mystical aura around them. For the first time, in my childhood, when I saw a time travel movie,I was so awstuck by the phenomenon that I could not sleep whole night. But by adulthood I got to know that time travel theory is still in its juvenile state and yet to be explored. What makes these scientists different form us and So, the question arises here, like how these scientists think? what is their methodology and modus operandi?
Without wasting time lets study how a scentist thinks and operates.
Every scientist has a unique way of perceiving things but in general these sceintists follow some basic scientific method involving four steps which are as follows:

Scientific way of thinking.

1.Observation

when these scientists see any interesting event or phenomenon  happening, they observe it in detail. Then they describe and measure with the help of mathematics. Such a mathematical measurement information is called data.

2.Hypothesis

After having recorded enough data, a hypothesis is assumed. This hypothesis conveys the possible explanation of the event or phenomenon under observation. Postulate is another word for hypothesis. Further, hypothesis is made keeping in mind that it must be backed and tested by an experiments.

3.Experiments

Experiments are the tests performed to see whether the hypothesis is true or not. Lot of information is collected which helps to validate the hypothesis. There are cases when experimental results do not support the assumed hypothesis. In such cases scientists must propose a new hypothesis and again new experiments are performed to tests the new hypothesis.

4.Theory

Hypothesis eventually becomes a theory, when scientists perform experiments with consistent results and confirm the hypothesis. This theory is still under scrutiny and undergoes experiments and if needed modified or replaced. And again a new hypothesis is proposed and once again experiments are conducted to confirm the same.

Dear readers, you have gone through the steps, a scientist follows but in reality these steps cannot summarize the struggle, pain and hard work of a scientist who repeats these steps for n number of times during his life time. There are few scientists who vanishes from the surface of the earth with no fame and appreciation but their work left behind help other scientists to achieve their goals.

IUPAC naming Of Aromatic Compounds

Definition of Aromatic Compounds: "Compounds containing benzene ring have distinctive fragrances. Hence, benzene family compounds are called Aromatic compounds . Example: Toluene, Aniline and Phenol". Figure 1.1 Long form of IUPAC: "International union of pure and applied chemistry". Aromatic compounds having benzene in their structural formula have been important in Chemistry. In the IUPAC naming of  aromatic compounds  common names of derivatives of benzene, such as Toluene, Aniline and Phenol, are used to name the whole compound. Figure  below shows the structure of Toluene, Aniline and Phenol: Let's see how these derivatives of benzene are named: No.1)   Figure 1.2 W hen benzene ring has only one substituent, there is no need of numbering. And as per IUPAC, first comes the name of substituent, followed by the common name  benzene. Example: Toluene, Aniline, and Phenol. No.2)   Figure 1.3 When benzene ring has more than one substituent, then, start ...

IUPAC naming of Alkenes and Alkynes.

Approximately 4 billion to 2.5 billion years ago a geological process began acting on the remains of plants and animals and as a result of such a long process occurring under layers of earth's crust, today we have fossil fuels. Coal, petroleum, natural gas, and crude oil are the fossil fuels which we use in our daily life in one or the other form and knowingly or unknowingly we have become slaves of this fossil fuels.  Organic compounds  such as alkanes , akenes, alkynes and polymers  also known as hydrocarbons, which are mainly derived from fossil fuels. This, hydrocarbons are the organic compounds majorly formed of hydrogen and carbon atoms. To know about  IUPAC nomclature of alkanes you can check out my earlier blogs. In this blog we will study alkenes and alkynes. Let's start: Alkenes and alkynes are the hydrocarbon compounds with at least one double and triple bond respectively.  Figure1.1 For example: we will see first member of alkene family, called Ethe...

How to learn photosynthesis.

Let's start from the word itself " Photosynthesis ". If I Break the word Photosynthesis in two parts,  N o.1 Photon , The word "Photon" means particle of light derived from the Greek word "Phos" which also means light. And,  N o.2 "Synthesis", The word "Synthesis" means to synthesize something out of  various ingredients. Combination of these two words Photon+Synthesis, that is photosynthesis, means synthesizing "something" with the use of direct sunlight, water and carbon dioxide. This "something" here means food in the form of glucose, the source of energy. The process of Photosynthesis is applicable only in the case of plants, algae and group of bacteria, called Cyanobacteria. And the must ingredients are direct sunlight, water and carbon dioxide. Guys, you would agree with me it's a miracle by mother nature !! In case I am hungry I have to go in the kitchen, look for veggies and cook them to satisfy my need ...
