Carbon dioxide is an acidic colourless gas found in the atmosphere with density higher than air. Chemically it is known and written as CO2 containing single atom of carbon covalently bonded with two atoms of oxygen.
The figure above is a chemical structure of Carbon dioxide(CO2), which shows a single carbon atom in the middle, bonded to the two oxygen atoms on the either side by a Covalent chemical bond.
Most often we mistook the greyish, black polluted air in the atmosphere is a carbon dioxide gas but its a mixture of Carbon dioxide, Carbon monoxide, Sulphur dioxide, Nitrogen oxide, Ozone, Lead, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon, Neon, Helium, Hydrogen, Xenon and Particulate matter.
Since the day human beings started using fossil fuels as the main source of energy; Carbon dioxide has been the prime culprit of Global warming and belongs to the family of greenhouse gases which essentially keeps our planet warm. But in the last 100 years there is a dramatic increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and thus, has become the major cause of global warming.
